How to get admission in Teachers’ Training School in India?
Graduates who have completed their degrees can enroll for teachers training program. Teachers'
training is conducted in three levels and they are Pre- School Teachers’ Training, Elementary
School Teachers' Training and Secondary School Teachers' Training.
Pre- School teachers training
Pre- School Teacher training is conducted in order to qualify teachers to teach the pre- school
classes of nursery and kindergarten that are the foundation classes. To enter into a pre- school
teachers’ training the applicant has to have a minimum qualification of 10th or +2 that is
secondary school education or senior secondary. The duration of the pre- school teacher training
is one year to two years. These are unaided institutions and private in most cases.
The Department of Education has fixed a minimum percentage of arts and science courses to be
qualified for nursery and primary teachers training courses.
Elementary Teachers' Training
Elementary teacher training is given to teach the classes of Std 1 to V. The minimum
qualification to enter into the elementary teacher training schools is +2 or 12 years of school
education. In most of the states the duration of the course is 2 years, but in some it is one year
with work experience. There are government training institutions, private aided and unaided
private schools.
Secondary School Teachers' Training
This is to prepare the teachers to take classes for students of 6th to 12th. The applicants should
have graduated in Science, Social studies, commerce, humanities etc. Many postgraduates also
apply for admission in these teachers' training institutions. There are seats under the reservation
schemes for the SCs and STs and the other backward classes in the government quota. There are
15 percent placement seats in the education departments and teachers' training schools for the SC
/ ST.
The Curriculum for Teachers' Training
The Primary School Teachers, especially for the first three classes teach literature, numbers
and life skills. The teacher is expected to know the process of the growth of a child and its
learning skills and development. The secondary teacher should essentially be familiar with
the psychology of an adolescent and should understand that social process other than the
subject knowledge. The curriculum is developed for the primary teachers' training by the state
government of teachers training. There are also teachers' training schools for children with
special needs. The procedures for recruitment of teachers for the entry into teachers’ training
schools may be different. In some places the performance of the candidates in the competitive
exam decides the admission and in some states they are recruited based on the professional
and academic background of the candidate. For a lecturer post in a college or University the
candidate should pass the National test that is conducted by UGC or any approved agency.
Master's degree with a minimum of 55 percent or a grade equivalent to that with an academic
record that is good. The NCERT has already started designing some training and orientation
programs to aid the backward minorities.
